About Austin, Texas
Located at the seat of Travis county and central Texas, the city of Austin is the 11th-most populous city in the United States, and is the capital of Texas. Home to about 912,791 people and counting, its citizens -- also known as "Austinites" - are a diverse group of people who are mainly made up of government employees, foreign and domestic college students, musicians, high-tech and blue-collar workers, and business people. Recently, the Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird," and is believed to be understood as the classic "Texas-style" sense of protecting small, unique, local businesses from being overpowered by large corporations.
Historically, pioneers began to settle in the central area of Austin along the Colorado, around the 1830's. After Mirabeau B. Lamar, the Vice President of the Republic of Texas, visited the area between the years 1837-1838, he proposed that the capital should be relocated to the area that is situated on the Colorado River, near the present-day Congress Avenue Bridge. Then, in the year 1839, the site was officially chosen as the republic's new capital, which was then renamed to Austin, in honor of the "Father of Texas," Stephan F. Austin.
Today, Austin has been keeping it "weird" with its numerous shops, annual cultural events, and the like, with its famous tourist attractions, which include: Sixth Street, South by Southwest festival, the Paramount Theatre, South Austin Museum of Popular Culture, The Mexic-Arte Museum, and a whole lot more! This city will truly kick out the boredom out of your system, and keep you interested each time you turn your head and look elsewhere.
