Riding on the school bus for the first time is a big step for your child. While being the safest mode of transportation for getting your children to and from school, injuries can still occur if your children are not careful and aware when getting on and off the bus. Here are some tips on school bus safety.

Getting on the bus safely

Practice punctuality

Be at the bus stop at least 5 or 10 minutes earlier than the scheduled pickup time, to avoid running to and from the bus.

Teach them patience

Teach your kids to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop, and to never walk behind the bus.

Utilize handrails and good manners

Instruct younger kids to use handrails when boarding and exiting the bus, and to be mindful of objects that could get caught in the door, such as untied shoe laces or jacket sleeves. Remind your kids to avoid pushing or shoving the other kids, and to hold onto the handrail for extra safety and balance.

Road Awareness

If you need to cross the street to get on the bus, watch the driver. When the driver knows that it is safe, he or she will signal your kids to cross, but watch for traffic! Walk quickly, but don’t run.

Seats, Snacks and Playtime

Train your kids to take their seat quickly instead of choosing a seat, walking around in a moving vehicle is dangerous. Save snacks for mealtime or when you get home. The snacks may make a mess, or can become a choking hazard when the bus goes over a big bump. As much as possible, refrain from playing inside or around the school bus.

Don’t move around

Hold bags and packages on your lap. Don’t stick your feet in the aisle, where one could trip on them. Keep your head and arms inside the bus. Don’t throw anything out the windows, or around the bus.

Indoor voice

Do remember to tell your children to talk quietly in the school bus, so that the driver can concentrate on getting to school safely.

Wait for your turn

If everybody tries to leave the bus at the same time, it only succeeds in creating traffic inside the bus. Typically, people in front are the first to leave. Do not push.

Dropped items and emergencies

If you drop something near the bus, don’t pick it up. Tell an adult or the driver, and remind your child to call or text when he or she is nearly home.
